Grants and Contributions:
Grant or Award spanning more than one fiscal year (2017-2018 to 2018-2019).
A surgical laser developed by an Ontario-based industrial partner could have additional capabilities to helpx000D
increase its value in the operating room. By leveraging the expertise, track record, previous developments andx000D
infrastructure of the academic partner, a new laser scalpel will be developed that is capable of deliveringx000D
spatially resolved pathology results to surgeons. Further development and integration with academic partner'sx000D
existing technologies will result in a platform that can display information that can be used to classify tissue asx000D
healthy or cancerous -- and subtype the tumour -- using a technique called mass spectroscopy. This molecularx000D
information can be displayed in real time to surgeons, guiding them to the areas of the tumour to be surgicallyx000D
removed. This insight can transform how surgeons approach cancer surgeries, improving the health ofx000D
Canadians and increasing the value of the Canadian technology.
