Program Purpose:

Adopting waste-to-bioenergy technologies as waste management practice can provide dual benefits ofx000D
diversion of waste from landfills and recovery of value-added resources. Thus, waste can be sustainablyx000D
utilized as a valuable resource rather than treated as waste. Anaerobic digestion, which is by far the mostx000D
widely implemented waste-to-bioenergy technology for conversion of the organic fraction of municipal solidx000D
waste to methane. However, anaerobic digestion of a single waste stream can sometimes be challenging due tox000D
inadequate nutrients and presence of toxic or inhibitory compounds in the feedstock. Co-digestion ofx000D
complementary waste streams is a promising engineering approach to overcome these difficulties via nutrientsx000D
balance and dilution of toxicants, which ultimately enhance methane production. In collaboration with GHD,x000D
the proposed research will investigate co-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge for improving processx000D
stability and digestion performance.
