Program Purpose:

One of the many strategies for mitigating the effects of anthropogenic CO2 is carbon capture and conversion, inx000D
particular to high value chemicals. One strategy for incorporation of CO2 is reactivity with functionalizedx000D
species such as epoxides. Another is electrochemical conversion. An important milestone in this field wouldx000D
be to use electrochemical CO2 conversion in conjunction with catalysis to form new green solvents. We canx000D
use bio-derived epoxides to render this a truly sustainable process.x000D
Kemetco Research is a B.C.-based private sector integrated science, technology and innovation company.x000D
Their core interests are on specialty analytical chemistry, chemical processes, and extractive metallurgy with ax000D
focus on green technologies. They focus on the demand for process technologies that are both efficient andx000D
environmentally acceptable and one of their ongoing projects is electrochemical reduction of CO2. We willx000D
work with Kemetco to develop a methodology to generate green cyclic carbonate solvents from CO2. Thisx000D
project has the potential to have a significant impact in the carbon mitigation measures in this industry, creatingx000D
value-added product from waste.
