Program Purpose:

Aereus is an Ontario-based company commercializing Aereus Shield. Their patented process produces ax000D
durable, attractive coating proven to kill harmful bacteria on contact. In Canada, Aereus Shield is marketed asx000D
an antimicrobial for use exclusively on Class I and Class II medical devices. Their coating provides ax000D
cost-effective intervention against common hospital pathogens and is an ideal solution for high touch publicx000D
surface. However, microbial pathogens are not the only microbes of concern. Viruses can survive on surfacesx000D
and can lead to the spread of infection in high risk settings such as hospitals. Through this grant, a greaterx000D
understanding of the mechanisms at play in the interaction between viruses and novel material coatingsx000D
prepared by Aereus Technologies. A model envelope virus system has been developed to probe the Aereusx000D
coating through a previously held NSERC partnership between the Aucoin Lab and Aereus. This follow-upx000D
project aims to verify exciting findings that these novel materials may be self-sterilizing. Together, Aereus andx000D
Aucoin will tackle the problem of nosocomial infections by deepening an understanding of Aereus materialsx000D
and then utilizing this understanding to better design novel products.
