Program Purpose:

Among the most critical of municipal infrastructure, the fact that the majority of the drainage system's components are buried makes the public, whose taxes contribute to its expansion and maintenance, less aware of its operation and, more importantly, renders its replacement prohibitively expensive, time consuming, and highly disruptive to residents' daily activities. As a result, modern municipalities allocate substantial budgets to operational maintenance of the drainage system in order to curb the consequences of aging. In the case of Edmonton, Canada, the operational maintenance package includes six major activities: (i) low pressure flushing, (ii) high pressure flushing (also known as jetting), (iii) closed-circuit televised inspection, (iv) visual inspection, (v) catch basin cleaning and (vi) hydro-mechanized cleaning (also known as chain flail). This research project seeks to improve the partner's drainage maintenance operations through the following objectives: (1) time study of the CCTV data collection process; (2) CCTV monitoring; and (3) reliability-based scheduling of CCTV inspection. Benefits of the proposed research to industry practice and to Canadian society include the following: (1) train practitioners to better understand how every task performed on site will impact the overall productivity; (2) positive change in the management practices of the industrial partner and in the mindset of its employees; (3) improved cost effectiveness of maintenance processes; (4) more efficient use of resources for drainage maintenance, such as man-power, water, and fuel; and (5) increased level of service and customer satisfaction.
