Program Purpose:

The widespread use of smartphones is providing rich grounds to gather traffic data. Smartphones often emitx000D
Bluetooth and/or WiFi signatures which can be detected by specialized sensors. Current technologies exist tox000D
detect these signatures using roadside equipment. An area of improvement is to enhance the positionalx000D
accuracy of the signal source. This is especially useful in traffic data collection when spatial scope of study isx000D
limited and traffic congestion is common. Currently, WiFi and Bluetooth sensors are used in singular form tox000D
detect road user presence. There is a theoretical potential to use a cluster of sensors to simultaneously gatherx000D
data from the same signal emitter to enhance positional accuracy. This project involves theoretical andx000D
experimental work to develop such technology and investigate its practical feasibility. Various equipmentx000D
set-up protocols and data integration algorithms will be investigated in order to improve positional accuracyx000D
estimate on road segments. The study will also lay the ground for more varied traffic facilities, aside from roadx000D
segments, in which the positional accuracy estimate is expected to be more challenging.
