Grant or Award spanning more than one fiscal year (2017-2018 to 2018-2019).
Recipient's Legal Name:
Mann, Ian (University of Alberta)
Program:
Engage Grants for universities
Program Purpose:
Massive eruptions on the sun can lead to disturbances in the earth's surrounding magnetic field. These, in turn,x000D
can drive excess electric currents in power transmission systems which heat transformers and may eventuallyx000D
lead to system failure. In this project, we will investigate the relationship between transformer failures inx000D
Altalink's power transmission system and geomagnetic disturbances. The results of the study will enablex000D
Altalink to begin to address forthcoming changes to reliability standards which will require power companiesx000D
to take account of geomagnetic hazards in their risk assessment and mitigation planning.
