Researchers at Ryerson University are collaborating with McClymont and Rak (MCR) geotechnical engineersx000D
to develop a new sustainable thermal storage technology that addresses the main challenges that have preventedx000D
geoexchange adoption in a meaningful way in Ontario. An innovative thermal storage medium, based on ax000D
construction slurry will be developed and used as an underground thermal storage medium, coupled to a groundx000D
source heat pump, to provide high-performance building heating and cooling. This new, inexpensivex000D
technology will be able to be effectively integrated with solar heating, making it more cost competitive withx000D
natural gas, leading to increased adoption and considerable CO2 emissions reduction in the building sector.x000D
The newness of this proposed research is the inclusion of phase change material in bentonite l for use in thex000D
underground storage medium. MCR geotechnical engineers will be building and testing a full-scale prototype.x000D
At the conclusion of this project, the team will have developed a new underground thermal storage and groundx000D
source heat pump product and service offering that will be ready for full scale implementation.
