Program Purpose:

The proposed work aims to catalogue the relationship between the values reported via the Udarnik U-1 Dropx000D
Hammer and the Boeing High Load Cone Penetrometer tests. The successfully defined relationship will allowx000D
continued use of the Udarnik U-1 test while safely and accurately reporting unpaved runway strength in termsx000D
of California Bearing Ratio (CBR). The principle underlying challenge is the high variability in unpavedx000D
runway materials used across the globe. The relationship between reported values may vary across differentx000D
materials, moisture contents, and compaction levels.x000D
To resolve the problem, various representative runway material samples will be documented and selected forx000D
testing. Samples will be prepared in lab at various moisture contents and compaction levels for robustness ofx000D
solution. Testing will be conducted using both the Udarnik U-1 Drop Hammer and the Boeing High Load Conex000D
Penetrometer, and the results will be analyzed for significance. The project methodology will provide a robustx000D
solution for the relationship between the two test methods. This will allow application of the solution to a widex000D
variety of runways and will therefore allow access to broader markets.x000D
Bi-weekly meetings will be held with representatives from both the research group and company personnel.x000D
Meeting topics may include progress updates, trouble shooting, feedback, etc. Deliverables shall include: ax000D
summary of current practices including test methods, runway construction and maintenance standards, materialx000D
standards, and sample preparation standards; summary of experimental design; summary of results; summaryx000D
of relationship/model; and the final project Technical Report.x000D
Bombardier will provide to the university the use of both pieces of testing apparatus for the purposes ofx000D
conducting the research. Further, company personnel will be involved in bi-weekly meetings to monitor projectx000D
progress and provide clarifications and input as needed.
