Program Purpose:

Boronized steels are widely used in oil and gas production, power generation, and the petrochemical andx000D
chemical processing industry due to their resistance to corrosion, acid, abrasive wear, heat and their highx000D
surface hardness. Because boron has a high neutron absorption cross section, there is a potential to expand thex000D
use of boronized steel to nuclear industry applications, such as corrosion-resistant radiation shielding materials.x000D
In these applications the corrosion behaviour of these materials when exposed to ionizing radiation needs to bex000D
understood. However, no data on radiolysis-induced corrosion of boronized steel is available.x000D
This project explores the impact of gamma radiolysis water as a function of solution pH on the corrosionx000D
dynamics of boronized steel. The data obtained from this analysis will provide information that can be used tox000D
assess the potential for expanding the use of boronized steels to nuclear industry applications.
