Title:
Reconstructing the Fire History of Terra Nova National Park Using Lake Sediment Cores
Agreement Number:
GC-1641
Agreement Value:
$12,375.00
Agreement Date:
Feb 23, 2022 - Apr 30, 2022
Description:
This contribution agreement will contribute to other research projects that have been ongoing to reconstruct the fire history of Terra Nova National Park. This project will use radiocarbon dating of charcoal samples collected from lake sediment cores to determine the frequency and extent of fire over an 11,000 year-period. Sampling will be conducted in the north-shore ecoregion and will complement previous analyses of fire history that were bases in the central Newfoundland Forest ecoregion. The results of this research will provide a more complete understanding of historical fire events and the applicability of using prescribed fire in present day operations as a means of maintaining black spruce forest in Terra Nova National Park.
