Program:

Youth Substance Use Prevention Program

Program Purpose:

The 2023 federal budget announced $20.2 million for a new community-based program to prevent substance use and related harms among youth, under the renewed Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy, led federally by Health Canada. Using a collaborative approach, the Youth Substance Use Prevention Program focuses on strengthening protective factors—such as healthy relationships, safe environments, and school and community connectedness—to support youth health and well-being. The Program is based on the internationally recognized Icelandic Prevention Model (IPM), a community-driven approach developed by the Icelandic Centre for Social Research and Analysis and implemented globally through Planet Youth. It aims to build community capacity, support Canadian implementation of the IPM, and advance knowledge development and exchange through evaluation.
