With SmartICE deployed, the community can have expanded availability of the ice thickness monitoring service and details on-ice conditions longer during the ice season. This information is available in the form of sea-ice hazard maps at the community scale every 7-10 days, more often during shoulder seasons when ice conditions are more dynamic. The maps are validated through the observations, measurements and traditional knowledge of SmartICE operators. They are available to community members in print and through an online data portal.
The Science and Technology program aims to create a strong research presence in Canada’s Arctic through POLAR. The program builds a knowledge base to support effective solutions to Arctic issues, northern policy and research development, and advances Canada’s position as a leading Arctic nation.
