Agreement Number:
PKA-1617-0005
Agreement Date:
Mar 8, 2017 - Mar 31, 2022
Description:
The POLAR Circumpolar Giant Floor Map (GFM) and Classroom Floor Maps (CFMs) program will see the creation of two GFMs and five CFMs. Two GFMs and three CFMs that will tour to schools across Canada for three years with a specific focus on reaching schools in Northern Canada. The additional two CFMs will be shipped to CHARS and Polar headquarters. Each GFM/CFM will tour with an accompanying kit of classroom activities and props that will bring the map to life and highlight important advances being made in Canadian Northern science and innovation. The objectives of this project are to increase student interest and engagement with Canadian science and technology in the Arctic, to create authoritative and reliable resources for both northern and southern teachers and to create materials that will be relevant to all Canadians. As a result of the touring of five maps, both northern and southern Canadians will have a better understanding of the critical role that science and technology play in Northern Canada and the leadership role that POLAR holds in the field. Additionally, students and teachers will be better informed of how the Arctic has, and continues to, change and discover what effect they can have on this process.
Organization:
Polar Knowledge Canada
Expected Results:
The GFM/CFM program will provide direct connection to over 30,000 students per year. The exposure of these students to northern innovation, science, technology and infrastructure will allow them to develop interest in the field. Students will be able to see tangible results and career options within STEM, specifically focusing on the advances that are being made in the Arctic. Within each activity developed, students will see the impact that dedicated organizations and networks are having in northern Canada and be encouraged to think about other ways in which they could assist with future advances.
