Agreement Value:

Agreement Date:

Description:
Our objectives are to use the experience and knowledge gained by Inuit youth in Nunavut to develop similar capacity within Yukon First Nations to: identify the strengths of Traditional Knowledge and the strengths of western scientifically-derived knowledge; explore how the two can work better together to address issues of local relevance to these communities. Develop tools to: Identify and set local research priorities; Engage with mainly southern but also Yukon-based researchers.
Organization:
Polar Knowledge Canada
Expected Results:

Results: We have seen in Nunavut that engaging youth in these activities results in stronger, more confident leaders with the capacity to represent their communities’ interests through improved relationships with researchers, government and industry. At the same time, we have seen researchers having improved access to data and more robust results that better incorporate local Traditional Knowledge. Barriers to Bridges – Yukon will give youth the opportunity, confidence and experience to help their communities work effectively with researchers to meet the communities’ own local needs. These northern communities will be able to play a more active role in research being conducted around them and the research will be of more local relevance. Yukon First Nation youth, working with Inuit youth will develop new confidence in dealing with challenges unique to this area of the north as they become tomorrow’s leaders. They will form a bond and working relationship across Canada’s North and will be able to help provide similar training and mentorship to other Yukon First Nation Youth.
