Results: We have seen in Nunavut that engaging youth in these activities results in stronger, more confident leaders with the capacity to represent their communities’ interests through improved relationships with researchers, government and industry. At the same time, we have seen researchers having improved access to data and more robust results that better incorporate local Traditional Knowledge. Barriers to Bridges – Yukon will give youth the opportunity, confidence and experience to help their communities work effectively with researchers to meet the communities’ own local needs. These northern communities will be able to play a more active role in research being conducted around them and the research will be of more local relevance. Yukon First Nation youth, working with Inuit youth will develop new confidence in dealing with challenges unique to this area of the north as they become tomorrow’s leaders. They will form a bond and working relationship across Canada’s North and will be able to help provide similar training and mentorship to other Yukon First Nation Youth.

This Program aims to lead the mobilization of polar science and technology into action. CHARS will analyse and disseminate polar knowledge from its Science and Technology Program, as well as that from current federal, territorial and other stakeholders, and investments to inform management, programming and policies; promote Artic science and technology nationally and internationally; and build capacity through training, outreach, and learning opportunities. This will ensure polar knowledge is relevant to stakeholders and builds a science culture in Canada.
