Title:
Life on Thin Ice: Microplastic Pollution and Climate Impacts on Arctic and Antarctic Algae
Agreement Number:
POLAR-2526-0013
Agreement Value:
$99,900.00
Agreement Date:
Dec 12, 2025 - Mar 31, 2027
Description:
The project will test how microplastic exposure affects psychrophilic algae under long-term warming stress. The project will use AI-controlled photobioreactors to culture polar algae under simulated warming and microplastic exposure. They will integrate experimental data with machine learning and create predictive models of algal resilience under environmental change.
Organization:
Polar Knowledge Canada
Expected Results:

Improve understanding of how combined microplastic contamination and long‑term warming affect polar algae, strengthening knowledge of ecosystem responses to environmental change, informing protection of Arctic and Antarctic food webs, and enhancing Canada’s scientific leadership and international collaboration in polar research.
