Title:
Response of saline permafrost to climate change and impacts on permafrost stability of Arctic coastal communities.
Agreement Number:
POLAR-2526-0016
Agreement Value:
$100,000.00
Agreement Date:
Mar 4, 2026 - Mar 31, 2027
Description:
The project will conduct laboratory experiments at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) to study how salinity, temperature, and pressure affect ice formation in frozen soils. Fieldwork in Grise Fiord will document local climate, landscape, and water conditions that influence ground-ice formation and help interpret the laboratory results.
Organization:
Polar Knowledge Canada
Expected Results:

Improve understanding of ground‑ice formation in saline permafrost, strengthening coastal hazard and erosion predictions, informing community adaptation and infrastructure planning, and reinforcing Canada’s leadership in Arctic and international permafrost research.
