Agreement Number:
POLAR-2526-0025
Agreement Value:
$200,002.00
Agreement Date:
Mar 28, 2026 - Mar 31, 2028
Description:
This project will develop and optimize low-cost, scalable, and climate-adapted biofilters for wastewater treatment in Canada’s Arctic, while protecting native plant species and enhancing ecosystem services. Through laboratory and field experiments, the project will strategically select native Arctic plants and optimize engineered biofilter media to identify system designs that effectively remove pathogens, nutrients, and other contaminants from wastewater, while supporting ecosystem services and long-term system resilience.
Organization:
Polar Knowledge Canada
Expected Results:
Improve water quality and wastewater treatment in Arctic and Northern communities by demonstrating nature‑based infrastructure using native plants and IoT monitoring, while strengthening Indigenous partnerships, knowledge exchange, and Canada’s Arctic research capacity.
