Grants and Contributions:
Title:
Advancing Snow Water Equivalent Retrieval Using NISAR L-band Interferometry in the Yukon River Headwaters:Toward Operational Hydrological and Ecological Applications.
Agreement Number:
NRS-2627-0002
Agreement Value:
$10,000.00
Agreement Date:
Apr 1, 2026 - Mar 31, 2027
Description:
This project will use data from the new NASA-ISRO NISAR satellite mission, combined with field-based snow measurements and collaboration with Kwanlin Dün First Nation, to improve estimates of snow water storage in Yukon’s mountainous regions. By developing and validating methods to monitor snowpack and its influence on river flow, flooding, hydropower generation, and cold-water habitats, the research will address a major gap in northern hydrological knowledge. The resulting satellite-based monitoring approach will support local stewardship, flood forecasting, water management, and climate adaptation while advancing innovative snow-monitoring technology for northern environments.
Organization:
Polar Knowledge Canada
Expected Results:
Develop and validate a satellite-based approach for estimating snow water storage in Yukon’s mountainous regions using NISAR satellite data and field measurements, resulting in improved snowpack monitoring, enhanced flood forecasting and water management, and better understanding of snowmelt impacts on hydropower generation and cold-water habitats to support climate adaptation and northern stewardship.
