Description:

This project will expand a community-led polar bear research network in Nunavut’s Foxe Basin region by training local teams to use non-invasive monitoring methods, such as hair snares and camera traps, that align with Inuit values and support community ownership of research. By combining Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit with scientific analyses of genetics, diet, body condition, and contaminant exposure, the project will improve understanding of polar bear populations and environmental change across Arctic regions. The research will strengthen local capacity, support wildlife co-management and conservation decisions, and create training and employment opportunities for Inuit communities and future generations of northern researchers.
