Description:

This project will examine how wildlife use and respond to the Old Crow Winter Road and other linear corridors in the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation Traditional Territory, where climate change and past resource development have altered important habitats. Through a community-led monitoring program using motion-activated cameras, the Teechik Guardians are collecting data on the movements of caribou, moose, wolves, bears, and other species to better understand how these corridors influence predator-prey interactions and wildlife behaviour. The findings will support Indigenous-led land stewardship, inform future infrastructure planning, and help northern communities assess the impacts of linear developments on wildlife and traditional food sources.

Establish a Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation-led wildlife monitoring program to assess how winter roads and other linear corridors affect wildlife movements and predator-prey interactions, resulting in improved understanding of development impacts, stronger Indigenous land stewardship, and better-informed infrastructure planning and wildlife management decisions.
