Description:
The purpose of this contribution is to provide funding to carry out an in-depth research and engagement process with governing boards of First Nations self-administered police services in order to inform the co-development of federal legislation on First Nations policing as an essential service and to ensure that the legislation pays due regard to governance frameworks as necessary to the implementation of that legislation. The final report will describe the present model of board governance and provide recommendations for a future model that could be framed in the legislation.

Expected Results:
It is expected that this project will contribute to the co-development of an enabling legislative framework on First Nations police services that can set governance standards and remain true to community policing needs. The project will enhance the effectiveness of police services in First Nations communities that are professional, dedicated, and culturally responsive to the public safety needs of communities.
