Description:
The Connections: Mi’gmaq Youth Leadership Peer Program will be designed using the Project Venture model and incorporating traditional Mi’gmaq customs to instill leadership skills amongst youth of Listuguj. The activities will consist of 12-month long cycles that follow the seasons of the year and have youth participating in discussions, team building activities, leadership workshops and cultural events. The program will be evaluated to document how it was adapted to meet the cultural needs and context of the Listuguj First Nation and to assess its effectiveness under this First Nations lens.

Expected Results:

The anticipated immediate to long-term outcomes of the project include: youth engaged in culturally relevant activities to increase sense of identity; development of leadership skills; improved social, decision-making and problem-solving skills; increased connection to Elders and the community as a whole; reduction of youth committed crime; reduction of drug/alcohol use amongst youth; preservation of Mi’gmaq language and cultural activities; and an evaluation documenting the effectiveness of an adapted model that could be utilized by other Indigenous communities.

The purpose of the contributions is to provide support to Aboriginal organizations (on and off-reserve), Aboriginal governments and municipalities in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations and or communities to develop tailored approaches to community safety, alternatives to incarceration and reintegration of Aboriginal offenders that are responsive to the concerns, priorities and unique circumstances of Aboriginal communities.
