Description:
The Oskyak Nakatemowak (Youth Watch Over Us) project will focus on knowledge building, knowledge sharing and capacity building to establish safety within the community by organizing various workshops and activities surrounding historical identity, youth empowerment, family ancestry, and community physical safety concerns. The goal for this project is to institute an active, safe, and historically rooted community. Through workshop delivery, training, research, and surveys, the project will focus on four components: a Youth Ambassador Initiative, elaborated Historical Scan, individual Family Trees, and Solar Lights installation. Target population will include: children, Youth, Elders, and families.

Expected Results:

The projected outcomes for this project include: Development of Youth Ambassador leadership skills; Community members’ increased participation in project activities/workshops; Solar lights installed in residential and public areas to enhance community safety; The Youth in the community will be receptive to the youth ambassador and start developing leadership skills; Family tree workshop will help build a sense unity in the community; Understanding of community history; Quarterly surveys will distinguish if activities/workshops are working; keeping CSP evergreen and keep on top of safety issues; Youth wellness and safety groups will have developed integral leadership skills and influence the community; Youth will have a voice to speak up about issues and decrease mischief within the age group; Reconnected families bringing back kinship and sense of belonging; Decreased overall crime in youth; and new historical knowledge will enlighten community members to innovatively problem solve and heal going forward.

Program Purpose:

The purpose of the contributions is to provide support to Aboriginal organizations (on and off-reserve), Aboriginal governments and municipalities in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations and or communities to develop tailored approaches to community safety, alternatives to incarceration and reintegration of Aboriginal offenders that are responsive to the concerns, priorities and unique circumstances of Aboriginal communities.
