Description:
The Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) will host community safety planning engagement sessions to develop one (1) comprehensive strategy to address safety concerns amongst the nine (9) affiliated MLTC First Nation communities. The sessions will include community members, individuals, agencies and organizations who will discuss various strategies and options to potentially respond to on-going crime and safety concerns. A Project Lead and Administrative Assistant is required to facilitate planning and coordination of these engagement sessions. There will be strong community Elder and knowledge keeper involvement.

Expected Results:

The projected outcomes for this project include: Project Lead and Administrative Assistant engaged to spearhead project; Affiliated parties engaged by Project Lead and MLTC; Engagement sessions held with all affiliated parties, resulting in the development of a comprehensive strategy to respond to crime and safety concerns; Increased community engagement, leadership and ownership; Increased awareness of crime and wellness programming and initiatives that support community safety; Publication of a Community Safety Plan and distribution to all participants; Increased community safety; Increased capacity to respond to community safety concerns; and Greater harmonization of traditional practices with contemporary requirements of community safety.

Program Purpose:

The purpose of the contributions is to provide support to Aboriginal organizations (on and off-reserve), Aboriginal governments and municipalities in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations and or communities to develop tailored approaches to community safety, alternatives to incarceration and reintegration of Aboriginal offenders that are responsive to the concerns, priorities and unique circumstances of Aboriginal communities.
