Agreement: Monitoring Drug Impaired Driving in Canada Through Toxicological Analyses of Injured Drivers Mar 28, 2024 - Mar 31, 2025
Description:
This study is to measure the prevalence and characteristics of a wide variety of substances, including cannabis, among injured drivers, and assess impaired driving crash risk and associated demographic factors and crash characteristics. Eleven (11) hospitals and trauma centres, in five provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and Alberta) will be involved in the study. It will involve a combination of paid researchers and research assistants, as well as voluntary medical practitioners in the participating jurisdictions, collecting and analyzing the blood samples of injured drivers.
Expected Results:Increased capacity to monitor trends and patterns in drug-impaired driving. Intermediate outcome Enhanced knowledge of the trends in crash risk associated with a variety of substances in Canada and in participating jurisdictions. Long-term outcome Policy makers’ decisions on drug-impaired driving are based on evidence.
