Description:
As part of the Government of the Northwest Territories commitment to enhancing safety in their communities, the Department of Justice will implement a Community Safety Officer (CSO) pilot project in partnership with an NWT community intended to enhance community safety and wellness, prevent crime and establish community partnerships. The role of a CSO program is to work with the community to enhance its safety through a variety of means that do not require police officers to perform.

Expected Results:

Short term outcomes:
- CSO agreement in place
- Training and development of CSO’s in community safety initiatives
- Provide information and awareness to community partners for development of community partnerships

Intermediate outcomes:
- Improve sense of community safety among community members due to the presence, availability, and approach of the CSO’s
- Increased engagement and improved relationships between community members and the CSO’s and the RCMP
- Increased information about the activities, governance, and efficacy of the CSO initiative.
- Reduction in workload for the RCMP (e.g., potential reduced calls for service).
- Increased collaboration between the community, the RCMP, the justice systems, and external service providers in the delivery of policing, justice, and other services to the community.
- Improved effectiveness of RCMP through improved information sharing and improved community collaboration in the delivery of services.

Ultimate outcomes:
-Well established CSO community partnerships
- Community safety and a sense of wellbeing through CSO resolution of disputes and disturbances,
- Increase in community crime prevention and safety initiatives
- Decrease in RCMP calls for services and prisoner counts
