Grants and Contributions:
Completion of all Phase 1 through Phase 4 objectives and activities, aligned with the Manitoba Police Services Act and policing standards, such that the SCO is able to submit a proposal to the funders for support of Phase 5 future objectives (implementation planning/ transfer agreement).
Indigenous communities have access to the funding:
- Through a regional police service feasibility study, Southern Chiefs' Organization will receive funding for the development of a new self-administered police service policing 34 SCO First Nations throughout Manitoba.
- The feasibility study will ensure that the police services are dedicated and responsive to the First Nations communities.
Funded policing services are dedicated.
- Phase 1 of the project will include hiring SCO First Nation Policing Staff (4 positions). Funded policing services are responsive to the needs and cultures of the First Nation and Inuit communities they serve.
- Phase 1 of the project will include creating an SCO Chiefs’ Committee on Policing and Justice, and developing SCO Elder/Knowledge Keeper Policing and Justice Advisory Committee.
- Phase 2 of the project will include research activities such as a literature review, best and promising practices documents, guiding documents, draft structure documents. It will also include community engagements to seek community input and feedback.
People living in First Nation and Inuit communities feel safe.
- The project includes extensive research, examination, validation, and evaluation of a possible police service for SCO communities.
