Description:
This project will improve Search and Rescue prevention in the marine community by educating the public about rip current hazards ands how to avoid them, provide science-based information on local rip current characteristics related to environmental conditions, and make local environmental data available in real-time. To support the achievement of the project, the University of Victoria will partner with Parks Canada British Columbia who will operate the drone and make video recordings, and with British Columbia Search and Rescue Association who will help with the dissemination of the project results through British Columbia AdventureSmart.

Expected Results:
The outcomes of this project will contribute to reducing the number of SAR incidents along beaches and the near-shore region by demonstrating rip currents at three beaches in a way easily accessible to the changing demographics of recreational water users, raise awareness of local rip current hazards, provide real-time observations of the local wave field with dedicated wave buoys, and provide public education on safe use of beaches and near-shore waters.
