Description:
This project will mobilize knowledge of Red Flag laws—including both emergency prohibition orders and emergency limitations on access orders—to individuals and communities most at risk of firearm-related harm. The focus will be on ensuring that survivors of gender-based violence, individuals accessing mental health or well-being services, and those in Indigenous, rural, and marginalized communities can understand, access, and confidently use these legal protections.

Expected Results:
The expected outcomes of this project are to increase knowledge and understanding of Red Flag laws among community officials, in order to strengthen local public safety systems through policy implementation. The project also aims to create plain-language tools on Red Flag laws to assist individuals who need to apply for emergency orders. These tools will be distributed to raise community awareness and inform survivors of the protections available to them regarding firearms and gender-based violence. This will empower local support networks to provide services to victims. Ultimately, building a support network around firearm-related violence in rural Alberta will enhance community safety and contribute to a safer, more secure, and more resilient Canada.
