Description:
The Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services (PATHS) seeks to educate gender-based violence specialists and other human service professionals about Red Flag laws through research, training, and public awareness initiatives. Project activities include webinars, workshops, media campaigns, and an online micro-course, with educational materials hosted on the organization’s Learning Management System for ongoing staff development. The initiative supports PATHS’ mandate to build safer communities and incorporates a targeted inclusion strategy for marginalized populations, including newcomers, 2SLGBTQI+ (Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, and other sexually and gender diverse) individuals, people living with disabilities, and Indigenous communities. Collaboration with legal professionals, mental health organizations, newcomer support centers, 2SLGBTQI+ and disability advocacy groups, along with consultation with survivors, ensures inclusive and effective outreach across Saskatchewan, with the ultimate goal of creating a safer, more secure, and resilient Canadian society.

Expected Results:

The project’s immediate outcomes focus on increasing knowledge and understanding of Canada’s public safety systems through targeted knowledge mobilization strategies that reach diverse audiences, including those at risk, service providers, and the general public. Intermediate outcomes include enhancing public education and confidence in Canada’s criminal justice and emergency systems by ensuring individuals, service providers, and communities are well-informed about Red Flag laws. The project will also strengthen community capacity to work with victims, offenders, families, and local officials by equipping professionals and the public with the knowledge and tools needed to advocate for safety. Ultimately, the project aims to create a safer, more secure, and resilient Canadian society by reducing violence and mitigating suicide risks through widespread understanding and application of Red Flag legislation.
