Description:
The Métis Nation of Ontario Bail Program seeks to generate avenues for early interventions for Indigenous peoples including women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual+) persons. Through the creation of culturally appropriate reintegration plans, training and supporting Indigenous bail workers, this project will increase the release of Indigenous accused from remand centers. This project will also provide an alternative to incarceration for participants and will help to decrease the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples within remand centers and the criminal justice system at large, while also decreasing court processing times thereby increasing access to justice.

Expected Results:

The outcomes expected are alternatives to incarceration project developed that reduce the pre-trial detention of the Indigenous population and increase external and internal referrals to the Métis Nation of Ontario Community Justice Program. The outcome will be a sustainable, self-determined bail program that can be utilized by citizens of the Metis Nation of Ontario alongside the longer-term goal of creating full wraparound justice supports.

Program Purpose:

The purpose of the contributions is to provide support to Aboriginal organizations (on and off-reserve), Aboriginal governments and municipalities in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations and or communities to develop tailored approaches to community safety, alternatives to incarceration and reintegration of Aboriginal offenders that are responsive to the concerns, priorities and unique circumstances of Aboriginal communities.
