Description:
Maashkaawizii Kwe (Woman of Inner Strength) provides 24/7 wrap-around supports for Indigenous women exiting federal and provincial corrections through a culturally grounded Healing Lodge. The program combines safe housing, counseling, and skills-building workshops based on the Medicine Wheel and Grandfather Teachings to ensure successful reintegration and reduce recidivism. It expands on Thunder Woman’s Niigan M’Kikeng model and includes transitional housing for continued support.

Expected Results:
To provide reintegration support. Participation in the Maashkaawizii Kwe program and access to after-care supports are expected to yield reductions in revocation pre-warrant expiry, post-warrant expiry reoffending, and returns to custody. Over time, improved outcomes for Indigenous women will also help address the over-representation of Indigenous children in provincial care, which is itself a contributor to justice system involvement later in life.
