The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) aims to reduce gun and gang violence in the municipality by collaborating with partners, stakeholders and community organizations and implementing new prevention and intervention initiatives for local at-risk youth as part of their gun and gang strategy developed in Year 1 (2022-23).

Expected Results:

Short-Term Outcomes:
- Identified municipalities and Indigenous communities have funding for prevention and intervention initiatives to address and respond to gun and gang violence;
- Knowledge to fill gaps at the community level related to high-risk youth and gun and gang violence is developed; and,
- Participants (high-risk youth) are identified and recruited for the prevention/intervention initiatives to be implemented in fiscal years 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26.

Medium-Term Outcomes:
-Identified municipalities and Indigenous communities implement informed prevention and intervention initiatives to respond to gun and gang violence;
- Improved services designed to prevent gun and gang violence by addressing root causes and to intervene when these incidents happen;
- Increased public and stakeholder awareness of the root causes of gun and gang violence in the Halifax region;
- Improved co-ordination between agencies who work with young people and their families through information sharing and a single database approach;
- Increased capacity of Indigenous community-based organizations to address community safety in the Halifax region; and,
- Enhanced municipal capacity to support youth who are at risk of sexual abuse/exploitation.

Long-Term Outcomes:
- Identified municipalities and Indigenous communities are equipped to address gun and gang violence through intervention and prevention initiatives;
- Long-term capacity of local organizations and partners are enhanced by local strengths and reduced barriers;
- Improved individual and community resilience against gun and gang violence; and
- Increased resilience within urban Indigenous communities.
