Description:
Proactively address the needs of people involved in the criminal justice system by promoting humane and informed criminal and social justice policy, practice, and responsible leadership to foster safer communities. The work is guided by affiliates who are experienced in operating a combined total of 14 Community-based Residential Facilities (CBRFs, also known as halfway houses) across four provinces, in addition to other services like transitional housing for people in conflict with the law.

Expected Results:

Short-term results: Set strategic action plan for funding cycle timeline to maintain sustainable operations and practices.  Advance needs of justice-involved people by promoting humane and informed criminal and social justice policy, practice, and responsible leadership to foster safer communities.

Medium-term results:
Generate reports/public information on research and other engagement initiatives, and leverage findings to inform advocacy related to the needs of people involved in the criminal justice system. Mobilize knowledge (e.g., webinars, newsletters, expanded website content) and exchange information (e.g., convening workshops/training) through opportunities with government and community-based actors in strategic areas/sectors. Ongoing cross-sector collaboration will build on SLSC’s existing network and identify areas for growth. Provide a community response to emerging criminal justice issues in partnership with Public Safety.

Long-term results:
Contribute to transformative change within and beyond the criminal justice system to cultivate safe, healthy, equitable, and inclusive communities, through effective leadership as a well-established organization. This will have value well beyond the 5 year period of this funding. Reinforce and maintain our reputation as a trusted partner of Public Safety towards achieving its objective of ‘building a safe and resilient Canada’. Successful completion of this 5-year project will set the stage for ongoing vibrant, healthy, and diverse community partnerships in the criminal justice sector in support of Public Safety’s goals.
