The project strengthens the capacity of the National Association of Friendship Centres to support justice, safety, and reintegration for Indigenous peoples in urban communities. It will build knowledge, coordination, and evidence-informed tools to address service gaps, strengthen collaboration, and promote culturally grounded justice responses.

Expected Results:

Immediate Outcomes: The project will increase knowledge and organizational capacity across the Friendship Centre Movement through the establishment of the Justice Council of Friendship Centres, completion of the Afro-Indigenous module and environmental scan on Friendship Centre justice programming.

Intermediate Outcomes: Friendship Centres will apply findings from the justice and MMIWG2S+ environmental scans, the national needs assessment, and the interactive mapping tool to strengthen planning, coordination, and delivery of justice, reintegration, and anti-violence programming. Improved access to evidence, service navigation, and shared frame works will enhance community capacity to support victims, individuals involved in the justice system, and those at risk of criminalization, including Afro-Indigenous people, addressing service gaps and systemic barriers contributing to overincarceration in urban Indigenous communities.

Long-Term Outcomes: The Urban Indigenous Justice Tool kit improves education across the Friendship Centre Movement by translating complex justice, anti-violence, and reintegration information into accessible, practical, and culturally grounded learning tools for Friendship Centre staff, leadership, and partners. It consolidates evidence from national environmental scans, a needs assessment, and the interactive MMIWG2S+ mapping tool into clear guidance that supports understanding of justice system pathways, service gaps, and effective community-based responses.
