Description:
Trent University is undertaking a project that places Elders in two parole offices where they will provide counselling and healing services to Indigenous parolees. There is also a research component that will assess the Elder-led healing programs with an end result of developing a comprehensive understanding of policy, practice and theory of community-based Elder-led healing programs.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of this project include: Indigenous men participating in Elder-led healing programs or Pathways Initiatives; Achieving successful community reintegration at significantly higher rates than men who did not participate in Elder-led healing programs; In cases where parole is revoked, the duration of the parole experience will be greater for men who participate in Elder-led healing programs in the parole setting than for those who do not; and In cases where men who have served multiple federal sentences and parole is revoked, the duration of the parole experience will be greater for men who participate in Elder-led healing programs in the parole setting than for those who do not. More particularly, in these cases the severity of the revocation offence will be less severe than in previous parole revocations for those men who participate in parole setting Elder-led healing programs than for those who do not.
