Description:
The purpose of this project is to conduct research and implement a pilot program that will examine through an Indigenous lens, the incarcerated person as a ‘parent’ first. The research stream of this initiative will determine if there are existing relationships between the parents/children and personal/ systemic barriers to establishing/maintaining family relationships.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes for this project include: Increased knowledge and strategies to address the challenges faced by incarcerated Indigenous parents; Incarcerated parents and their families will have increased knowledge about family connectedness during incarceration; Incarcerated parents will have increased access to specialized support services before and after release; Incarcerated parents and their families will have increased opportunity for successful reintegration; and The rate of re-incarceration for Indigenous parents will be reduced.
