Title:
National Disaster Mitigation Projects
Agreement Number:
2736114
Agreement Value:
$95,000.00
Agreement Date:
Aug 21, 2018 - Mar 31, 2020
Description:
Since 2010, Saskatoon has had three of the top 10 highest seasonal rainfalls on record. Between 2012 and 2016, the City recorded 28 days with rain events exceeding the one in two year return period. The impacts of climate change are expected to result in more frequent and intense rainfall events in the future. This Flood mapping project will consolidate and apply new IDF curves that incorporates climate change risks to update the city-wide urban flood maps and its design standards. The partners in this project is the city of Saskatoon, the University of Saskatchewan and Concordia University.
Organization:
Public Safety Canada
Expected Results:

LIDAR data will be obtained for new and developing neighbourhoods for use in modeling and flood map updates. Urban flood zones will be mapped for various storm events and risk levels. The project also will determine what changes to the storm water infrastructure design is needed with the application of the new IDF curves. Expected costs of flooding and expected costs to implement different storm water design standards to address climate change risks will be assessed.

Program:
National Disaster Mitigation Program (NDMP)
Program Purpose:

The purpose of NDMP is to effectively mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from, flood-related events foremost by building a body of knowledge on flood risks in Canada, and invest in foundational flood mitigation activities (e.g., Risk assessments, flood mapping, mitigation planning and investments in non-structural and small scale structure mitigation projects).
