Title:
Sackville Rivers Mitigation Planning
Agreement Number:
the PSIMS agreement number: 20795
Agreement Value:
$86,250.00
Agreement Date:
Jun 11, 2019 - Mar 31, 2020
Description:
HRM recently finalized the flood risk assessment study under NDMP Stream 1. The study assessed flood risk in flood prone areas across HRM selected from over 900 such sites. The study highlighted that significant parts of development within the Municipality were built within large natural watershed systems, and more specifically built within the floodplains of those watersheds. The Sackville Rivers system was identified as the highest priority area for flooding mitigation under the Stream 1 NDMP. Having completed the analysis under both Stream 1 and Stream 2 of NDMP, HRM is in a position to move forward with a mitigation planning study under Stream 3 of NDMP using results of previous studies as the foundation. This study will assess in further detail the engineering feasibility of potential flood remediation measures for this system for the high risk area
Organization:
Public Safety Canada
Expected Results:
The Sackville Rivers system was identified as the highest priority area for flooding mitigation under the Stream 1 NDMP study. Furthermore, HRM has completed a floodplain study for the Sackville Rivers system that yielded in calibrated Hydrological & Hydraulic models, flood modeling, flood line delineation and preliminary analysis of flood mitigation options. This study will assess in further detail the engineering feasibility of potential flood remediation measures for this system for the high risk area.

Program:
National Disaster Mitigation Program (NDMP)
Program Purpose:
The NDMP addresses rising flood risks and costs, and builds the foundation for informed mitigation investments that could reduce, or even negate, the effects of flood events. The NDMP fills a critical gap in Canada's ability to effectively mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from, flood-related events by building a body of knowledge on flood risks in Canada, and investing in foundational flood mitigation activities.
