Description:
Knowledge gathering / sharing circles will involve invited community members, Elders, Indigenous service providers, band councils, and representatives from several social service organizations pertaining to sexual violence and responses to such. These will identify gaps and explore opportunities for culturally grounded best practices to reduce racism, sexism and discrimination. Collectively, the activities are intended to develop the creation of an up-to-date map of policing services and policies currently in place in Mi'kma'ki to help inform the development of tools and resources to address gaps in the delivery of culturally competent police services.
Organization:
Public Safety Canada
Expected Results:

The recipient aims to produce a comprehensive review of previous studies including an evaluation of the Marshall Inquiry recommendations relevant to policing to inform future directions in policy making. It will create a map of the landscape of policing services in Mi'kma'ki to provide direction regarding gaps and establish an inventory of cultural competency training programs and an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of these programs to inform what to maintain and what to change. Moreover, there will be a report reflecting community-based priorities for culturally grounded policing relations to guide future engagement policies. Finally, there will be a "toolkit framework" consisting of comprehensive recommendations for next steps to build better relationships between police services and the police.
