Description:
The University of Regina project will work with Indigenous offenders with FASD involved in the criminal justice system in Regina, SK and Whitehorse, YK. The project will develop and deliver services to support successful diversion and/or reintegration and work collaboratively with defense counsel and correctional services to support FASD-affected Indigenous offenders. The project will also develop a service model for Indigenous organizations and front-line service providers on a person-centered FASD/criminal justice intervention that effectively addresses the over-representation of Indigenous offenders in the Canadian criminal justice system.

Expected Results:
The expected outcomes from this project are: reduce the overall duration of contact with the criminal justice system for Indigenous offenders with FASD; reduce the number of breaches that FASD-affected Indigenous offenders face in the criminal justice system; reduce unnecessary court delays; increase in-custody resiliency for FASD-affected Indigenous offenders; increase FASD-affected Indigenous offender engagement and understanding of the criminal justice system and their disability in order to deliver instruction to counsel, and to self-advocate in case management and release planning processes; and increase the level of understanding justice system stakeholders on the complexities of FASD as it relates to criminal justice system involvement.
