Description:
Gift Lake Metis Settlement, in support of the Community Safety Plan previously developed will engage the community in the development of a drug prevention/intervention strategy as well as the development of a process to identify (and hopefully remove) people involved in criminal activities. Activities such as walks, dances, youth drug prevention group, speaker series, drug prevention/intervention fair and “block parent” will support the community development and capacity building efforts to increase safety and service provision.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes from this project include: Increased/improved knowledge of community members with regards to safety and drugs; Increased awareness with regards to drugs and the effects it has on individuals, families, communities and all other aspects of life; Creation of/improved broader community engagement with activities and knowledge transfer; Creation of a safe place no matter the need and/or reason; Increased sense of safety for residents of Gift Lake Metis Settlement; Increased level of community participation as community member’s buy-in to the Community Safety Plan; and Increased horizontal interagency collaboration amongst community programs, leadership, regional agencies and the Community Safety advisory group.

The purpose of the contributions is to provide support to Aboriginal organizations (on and off-reserve), Aboriginal governments and municipalities in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations and or communities to develop tailored approaches to community safety, alternatives to incarceration and reintegration of Aboriginal offenders that are responsive to the concerns, priorities and unique circumstances of Aboriginal communities.
