Description:
This event will bring together representatives from partner communities from across Canada, who have participated in the Aboriginal Community Safety Planning Initiative, to meet with other participating communities in order to learn from shared experiences.  It will also provide an opportunity for Public Safety to learn how to better align its program with the needs of Indigenous communities and to develop best practices.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of the Gathering of Indigenous Communities 2020 project include participants having formed connections with other participants and will be able to support each other throughout their ongoing CSP work. Evidence and anecdotes will be gathered and will validate the extensiveness and uniqueness that success means to/for Indigenous communities. The voice of communities that participated in the CSP process are heard in informing Canada’s Action Plan to respond to the MMIWG Report.

The purpose of the contributions is to provide support to Aboriginal organizations (on and off-reserve), Aboriginal governments and municipalities in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations and or communities to develop tailored approaches to community safety, alternatives to incarceration and reintegration of Aboriginal offenders that are responsive to the concerns, priorities and unique circumstances of Aboriginal communities.
