Description:
The “Safer Dementia Friendly Communities Initiative” is a partnership between the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District, Cornwall Police and Ontario Provincial Police to create a safer community for those living with dementia. The project will help to increase awareness of wandering, helping caregivers prepare if the person they are caring for goes missing, and helping the public recognize a lost individual. The project has 3 components: 1) Implementation of Project Lifesaver locating radio frequency (RF) technology in the region (Finding Faster): The purchase of RF technology would provide peace of mind for caregivers and support to first responders in the event that an individual living with dementia goes missing.

Expected Results:
The expected outcomes of this project are to increase public awareness of people living with dementia getting lost through the Dementia Friendly Communities Initiative through outreach to care partners, service clubs, faith communities, to increase preparedness of caregivers and to eventually implement Project Lifesaver, an international program led by an organization of the same name. The program will work with local public safety organizations to provide safety equipment to those living in the target communities and at risk of getting lost.
