Description:

This project will enhance community-based policing for KDFN Citizens and improve on community connection, including the working relationship between KDFN and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The Community Safety Officers will enhance community safety through proactive measures and projects, as well as provide low-risk responses to address community concerns, including incidents stemming from social issues such as addictions and mental health. The CSOs act as liaisons between local community members and the RCMP to ensure police response considers KDFN culture and traditions.

Expected Results:

The expected outcomes of the CSO project include:
- Approximately 797 Indigenous People have access to services provided through Public Safety Canada and the Yukon Government funding;
- KDFN will have access to 4 full-time CSO officers that provide dedicated, non-enforcement, community safety programs to the community;
- KDFN CSOs receive culturally appropriate and trauma informed training;
- KDFN CSOs participate meaningfully in cultural and restorative justice practices with KDFN citizens;
- Increased sense of community safety among KDFN citizens is experienced as a result of the presence, availability, and approach of KDFN CSOs;
- Increased engagement and improved relationships between KDFN Citizens and the RCMP;
- Increased collaboration between KDFN, the RCMP, the justice system; and
- external service providers in the delivery of community safety programs, policing, justice, and other services.
