Title:
Assessing Posttraumatic Stress Injury Symptoms in Canadian Search and Rescue Volunteer Personnel
Agreement Number:
22735
Agreement Value:
$523,169.00
Agreement Date:
Aug 10, 2022 - Aug 9, 2025
Description:
This project aims to gather and analyze baseline data regarding the mental health of Public Safety Personnel (PSP) serving in the Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteer organizations: SARVAC (Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada), CASARA (Civil Air Search and Rescue Association), and CCGA (Canada Coast Guard Auxiliary). This will help inform the ongoing development of evidence-based activities designed to minimize the impact of duty-related exposures to Potentially Psychologically Traumatic Events (PPTEs) and other occupational stressors.
Organization:
Public Safety Canada
Expected Results:

The expected outcome of this project will be to use online surveys to collect data regarding the mental health of Public Safety Personnel (PSP) serving in Search and Rescue organizations. Using the collected data, a report will be produced for each partnering SAR organization, as well as an aggregated report, each of which will provide insights into duty-related mental health disorders affecting SAR PSP. The research results can be integrated with other PSP research, facilitating the development and deployment of mental health solutions that can support national and international mental health strategies (e.g., Canada’s National Action Plan on PTSD and Federal Framework on PTSD).
