Description:
This project will enhance the existing record suspension (pardon) program by improving outreach and education efforts to dispel the myths, redirect women with minimal financial means away from private services, ensuring a core group of volunteers are trained to offer the one-on-one support, adding a bi-monthly online peer support groups, and improving application access with financial subsidies for travel and obtaining documents. This project serves a variety of ethnic groups, including Indigenous and Inuit communities, through building capacity in Canada’s North and focuses primarily on women. The proposed service considers the challenges and trauma of applying for a record suspension and will implement measures to reduce the negative impact of the process while encourage clients to adhere to the timeline.

Expected Results:

The goal of proposed project is to ensure women who are eligible for a record suspension secure the suspension in a timely and supportive manner; addressing emerging related needs such as financial barriers, trauma, and the need for peer support or accompaniment support. This goal is split into client-focused and organizational-focused outcomes. The client-focused relevant outcomes measured will be: • Increased knowledge of record suspension process (immediate);
• Increased access to a supportive record suspension process; (immediate);  
• Increased advocacy and navigation skills (intermediate); and
• Increase capacity to reintegrate into one’s community (long term).

The sector/organizational -focused relevant outcomes measured will be:
• Increased sector and organizational capacity to support women seeking record suspensions (immediate);
• Increase number of successful record suspension applications (intermediate); and
• Increase available data identifying challenges within the current system with the intention of improving the process and available supports after this grant ends. (long-term).
