Description:

With this funding, John Howard Society (JHS) Grande Prairie can further develop, enhance and administer support services for pardon application assistance. The scope of the support to be provided includes considering barriers faced by individuals with a criminal records, and the impact that record has on their ability to find work, a home, or otherwise find their place and purpose in their community. The project proposed by JHS GP looks to address those barriers.

Expected Results:

The specific objective of the contribution stream is to provide funding for NVOs to create or expand application support services for individuals with criminal records looking to apply for a record suspension.

The ultimate goal of providing support is to assist with successful record suspension applications. JHS GP proposes their proposed services and target population will help address systemic inequities in the justice system by all clients, particularly Indigenous Peoples and communities. In short, JHS GP proposes their project is about removing barriers to access record suspensions, and ultimately about removing barriers for individuals with criminal records to full participation in society through post-secondary education, employment, volunteering, etc.

Their project will provide experience, data and results that may help influence justice policies and program funding, particularly related to service in rural, remote and Indigenous communities, and it will create a new funded service that will improve access to record
suspensions for those who currently struggle to access support in this area, an increased number of record suspension applications, and an increased number of people no longer living with barriers related to criminal records.

JHS GP has addressed fulfilling the following results and outcomes of the Program’s terms and conditions:
Immediate Outcomes:
· Increased knowledge and understanding for decision-making in Canada’s criminal justice and corrections systems.
· Shared knowledge and awareness leading to enhanced delivery of services, such as dissemination of information.
· Contribution recipients have the capacity to administer support services for pardon application assistance through program funding.

Intermediate Outcomes:
· Increased capacity of NVOs to fulfill their mandates.
· Contribution recipients implement support services for pardon application assistance through program funding.

Long-Term Outcomes:
· Individuals with criminal records are using supports provided by government-funded projects.
· Canada’s federal corrections and criminal justice system rehabilitates and reintegrates offenders.
