Description:

The City of Brantford will develop prevention and early intervention initiatives that seek to address youth involvement in gun and gang activity. The objective of the multi-year Building Safer Communities Fund (BSCF) project is to disseminate funding and support to community organizations to create locally-driven prevention and intervention strategies that effectively combat youth involvement in gun and gang violence. Additionally, the City of Brantford in partnership with Wilfred Laurier University, will develop comprehensive program research, evaluation and sustainability plans to increase the knowledge of the nature, scope and challenges of youth involved in gun and gang activities.

Short-Term Outcomes:
Identified municipalities and Indigenous communities have funding for prevention and intervention initiatives to address and respond to gun and gang violence
- Complete Call for Proposal and have the Action Table review/allocate funding to community organizations that seek to establish prevention and intervention initiatives that respond to gun and gang violence.

Medium-Term Outcomes:
Identified municipalities and Indigenous communities implement informed prevention and intervention initiatives to respond to gun and gang violence.
- Increase number of community organizations operating within the City of Brantford that provide targeted programs aimed at preventing youth engagement in gun and gang violence
- Increase number of community-based prevention programs and initiatives that address youth involvement in gun and gang violence
- Increase number of tools and resources available to community partners and service providers to effectively and sustainably address youth involvement in gun and gang violence
- Increase number of youth (6-26) actively engaged in pro-social programming including activities, or initiatives designed to promote and encourage positive social behaviours and skills.

Long-Term Outcomes:
Identified municipalities and Indigenous communities are equipped to address gun and gang violence through intervention and prevention initiatives.
- Increase understanding of the local context and the challenges in implementing effective evidence-based programs aimed at addressing youth involvement in gun and gang violence through active engagement in research, evaluation, and sustainability planning.
- Develop a sustainability plan to encourage local organizations to maintain efforts and build on successes achieved upon completion of the project.
